Vaccinations are a hot topic at the moment and we’ve been getting pretty sick of all the deadly viruses around. So we developed an animation to share some insights on what's in development in the world of inoculation. Carla Gallasch is a Vaccinologist, Research Assistant and science communicator with a passion for developing vaccines to tackle tomorrow's killer viruses. This film features her current research and we found it fascinating!

Carla explains that a major problem in vaccine development is bacteria becoming more clever in the ways that they hide from our immune system, and the drugs that are targeted to them. In response, she is developing what is called a whole-inactivated vaccine, which are versions of the bugs without the bit that makes you sick. Once in our system these sickness-free bugs teach our immune system how to protect against the real bugs if they ever decide to invade. So cool right!

We aimed for the visuals to capture the meeting of scientific precision and the vulnerable human subjects they’re designed to protect. Our goal was to highlight that vaccines are developed to safeguard people, your community, your friends, your family and others. To achieve this, we employed a minimalist white aesthetic for the scientific instruments and pathogen targeting mechanisms of the vaccines. In contrast, we depicted humans and backgrounds using a soft, hand-drawn style, capturing their essence with warmth and humanity. We used colours to depict the difference between helpful and unhelpful bacteria.
